Our wonderful, dedicated volunteers work in reception, finance, administration, peer mentoring, gardening, fundraising, thrift, maintenance and much more.

what is a volunteer?

A volunteer is someone who, unpaid and of their own free will, chooses to give their time, energy, skills and expertise to support Trevi in achieving our aims. The arrangement is voluntary on both sides.

The charity’s relationship with volunteers is based on trust and is not intended to have the obligations associated with employment. No payment, other than the reimbursement of agreed out-of-pocket expenses, is made by Trevi to people who give their time as volunteers.

We believe that by harnessing the passion and skills of our volunteer community, we can achieve more for women and their families. We want to grow and develop our volunteers for the benefit of the individuals and the wider charity. Volunteering can help you gain skills and experience to use in your personal or professional life. Volunteers may get involved with Trevi for a number of reasons:

• To make friends
• To give something back for help they, a family member or friend received
• They have an interest in the cause
• They want to learn and gain valuable experience

Whatever your motivation is, we value all our volunteers and hope you will enjoy your time with us.

what can you do as a volunteer?

• Direct support for women and their families via one of our residential or community services.
• Raising funds, for example by helping to run events, promoting the ways to give money and connecting us with their networks.
• Administration – assisting our office team in organising, filing and general admin work.

Katy: I began volunteering with Trevi in their Central Office in 2022. I was welcomed by the team and quickly made to feel an integral part of it. Lucy always takes the time to make sure that I have tasks that I understand, and that are appropriate for my skills. The staff at Trevi are united by their passion for supporting and empowering the women that come through Trevi’s houses. This makes it a great team to be part of.

Marie: I started volunteering with Trevi about eighteen months ago. I work with the amazing Marketing and Fundraising Team, although Trevi as a whole are all very helpful and supportive. I help with organising and attending fundraising events, help with admin in the office maintaining spreadsheets and I also do lots of research work for my team with regards to upcoming events. I look forward to helping Trevi every week and feel I am doing something worthwhile with my time. I only wish I had heard about Trevi sooner!

I want to volunteer, what do I do now?

Fill in the relevant application form on our website. Someone from the team will then be in touch to discuss what happens next. This is usually a visit and a chat, but could also be a more formal recruitment process, such as an interview.

What happens after I sign up to be a volunteer?

Once you’ve filled out an application form, we’ll be in touch to discuss next steps, which may include an informal interview.

How old do I have to be?

There is no upper age limit on volunteering with Trevi, however you must be over 16.

How much time should I give?

In general, there’s no set time volunteers must give, but some roles will require at least 1 shift a week. A shift pattern will be agreed with you before starting with us.

Will I be paid?

No, as a volunteer there’s no pay. We will ensure you don’t lose out financially by covering your agreed out-of-pocket expenses, such as travelling during volunteering hours.

Is there training?

Yes, but the type and amount of training depends on the role. However, every volunteer receives a thorough induction to their role, so that they feel confident in what they’re being asked to do.

Do I need experience?

No, there is no requirement for you to have volunteering/work experience in this sector. However, any knowledge or experience you may have regarding our services will help your application.

Do you do background checks?

If you are volunteering with our service users directly, a DBS check will need to be completed before you begin. If you are occasionally helping with events, then a DBS may not be required.
