giving a gift in memory will help us support women and their children like Charlotte
Charlotte was in Trevi’s residential rehab, Jasmine Mother’s Recovery, with her mum when she was 9 years old.
‘Trevi became my home in 2005, my mum Tracey was a resident and we lived in Trevi house for 13 months.
I remember the day I was told we would be going to Trevi . My mum was petrified, and I could tell. I on the other hand was excited, it was an adventure. I could see all the positives; it was going to help my mum after all, and she really needed it. Her fear of recovery was so powerful, she struggled to face it, her addiction was really all she had keeping her going, for her, it was a safety blanket, it made her feel warm and after so long of living the life she was living that became her new normal. I know she couldn’t see her future without her addiction, it scared her, but we had to embark on this journey together, she knew she would lose me if she didn’t.
When becoming a resident at Trevi house I soon realised I wasn’t the only person in the world that this was happening too, I wasn’t the only person that lived around substance misuse and domestic violence. I could see how much the other women loved their own children, I could see the power of addiction and I could see where that addiction had taken these women, this really helped me accept that my mums own misuse had nothing to do with me, she wasn’t choosing drugs and drink over me, it wasn’t a case of not being a priority to my mum.’
