What a night!

Reclaim the Night came back with a bang during Sexual Violence Awareness Week 2024, and we couldn’t be prouder of how the city came together to tackle the ever-growing issue of violence against women and girls in Plymouth. With attendance from MP Luke Pollard, local councillors from several political parties, important VAWG ambassadors from across the South West and hundreds and hundreds of Plymouth supporters, the event reached far and wide, addressing many angles of the highly prevalent problem.

Incorporating two of our city’s universities and inviting the younger generation into the conversation, the placard-making workshops initiated the event at Arts University Plymouth and were successfully attended by over 100 activists. The stunning, eye-catching screen-printed placards, that were designed by AUP graphic designers and illustrators, were visible throughout the march and added another layer of fascinating commitment to absorb throughout the crowd.

The peaceful march through our city centre was met with excitement and support from the public, with an overwhelming energy to encourage the survivors and victims in our group to raise their voices even louder. The Safe Space we offered at UPSU after the march was busy providing strength and compassion to individuals who bravely approached to share their story.

The speeches delivered by key players in the VAWG conversation engaged the audience throughout their intelligent, thought-provoking perceptions, and added the cherry on top to an event that encapsulated everything our city needed after several years of growth in VAWG crimes and reporting. The positivity and passion that ascended through the mass gathering summarised the outcome that Trevi envisioned for this event, and we can’t wait to do it all again next year!
