Rebecca Smith MP and Alexis Bowater OBE, join Trevi’s Warrior Women Walk to support survivors of domestic abuse in Plymouth

Trevi is thrilled to announce that Rebecca Smith MP will be joining this year’s Warrior Women Walk, taking place on Saturday, 5 October. This empowering event is also being championed by renowned broadcaster and women’s rights campaigner Alexis Bowater OBE. The walk will bring together survivors of domestic abuse, individuals walking in solidarity with loved ones affected by trauma and abuse, and supporters committed to ending violence against women and girls in our city.

This is Trevi’s third annual Warrior Women Walk and will raise crucial funds for the charity based in Plymouth, which provides support and safe spaces for those women affected by domestic abuse and violence.

The Warrior Women Walk attracts participants from across the region to raise awareness and show support for victims and survivors. With both Rebecca Smith MP and Alexis Bowater OBE lending their voices to the cause, this year’s walk promises to be a powerful demonstration of the community’s commitment to ending violence against women and girls.

Rebecca Smith, Member of Parliament for South West Devon, is well-known for her commitment to tackling gender-based violence and domestic, especially for women and girls. She expressed her strong support for Trevi’s mission;

‘Domestic abuse and violence against women and girls are tragic realities that far too many face in Plymouth including those within my own constituency. We cannot allow this to continue. It’s vital that we take a proactive approach, working together as a community to tackle this issue at its root.

‘Addressing these challenges requires both systemic change and cultural shifts, especially engaging men and boys to be part of the solution. Women should not carry this burden alone – we must all step up to ensure that Plymouth is a safe place for everyone.

‘Trevi is doing incredible work to offer a lifeline to those affected, and I’m proud to join the Warrior Women Walk. By walking together, we show survivors that they are not alone, and we rally for the vital services that help them rebuild their lives.’

Alexis was honoured with an OBE for her campaigning work in combatting violence against women and girls over the last 12 years and has a long history of championing gender equality, most notably through her involvement in the Nancy Astor Statue Campaign, which celebrates the first female MP to take her seat in the House of Commons. Nancy Astor’s legacy of advocating for women’s rights and equality resonates deeply with the cause of the Warrior Women Walk.

‘Nancy Astor was a trailblazer for women’s rights, and I’m proud to carry forward her spirit by supporting this important cause,” said Alexis. ‘The work Trevi does is life-saving. Every woman deserves to live free from fear and violence, and this walk is about raising the voices of survivors and ensuring they have the support they need.’

Hayley Everett, Head of Fundraising & Marketing at Trevi said, ‘We are thrilled to have Rebecca Smith MP and Alexis Bowater joining us for this year’s walk. Their leadership and advocacy send a powerful message to women in Plymouth: you are seen, supported, and deserve to feel safe. Together, we can break the cycle of abuse.’

Over the past two years, the Warrior Women Walk has raised over £61,000 and attracted over 500 women. The funds support Trevi’s Sunflower Women’s Centre, Plymouth’s only women’s centre, offering a safe haven for over 700 women with complex needs, many of whom have experienced trauma and abuse. Sunflower offers a wrap-around therapeutic service for any woman in need in the city. This could include addictions, mental well-being, criminogenic behaviours, domestic abuse and social isolation.

There is still time to sign up for the Warrior Women Walk. Women can walk as individuals, in teams, business groups and organisations. All are encouraged to get involved.
