Local women’s charity launch appeal to support vulnerable women and children this Christmas

Local women’s charity Trevi, launch their Big Give Christmas Campaign this week with a powerful video message in the hope to raise £12,000 in online donations.

By giving to the charity this week through the Big Give website, your donation will be worth DOUBLE and have twice the impact in supporting women and children affected by domestic violence and abuse.

They launch their campaign and urge people to think about the fact that Christmas isn’t a happy time for everyone. Whilst many are looking forward the festive season as a time for family and relaxation: a time to show others that you care, eat, drink, sing and play, in reality there are many women living in fear in their own home, terrified about being trapped with their abuser over the Christmas period.

In Britain, every 6 seconds another woman is assaulted in her own home. Plymouth is one of the largest cities on the south coast, with a high prevalence of domestic violence. With a year-on-year increase of 21%; domestic violence accounts for 27% of all crime in Plymouth, compared to the national figure of 16%.

Trevi are impatient to see a world without violence against women and girls. Over the past year, 90% of women said that their Sunflower Women’s Centre was a lifeline, with 88% of women reporting they were able to move forward in life.

Their specialist team works with every woman according to what she needs. They provide women-only spaces that are designed to be safe and nurturing. Their trauma-informed tutors deliver courses such as the freedom programme, which helps survivors make sense of what has happened so they can achieve a fresh start in life. Their experienced practitioners provide 1-1 support for any woman – no matter what stage of her journey – ensuring that every woman is safe, supported and all her needs are met. They also work hard to educate and promote issues whilst elevating women’s voices to address stigma and drive societal change.

Tammy, a mother supported by Trevi says, ‘For years I was made to feel like I was the problem – the confusion was overwhelming. Over Christmas time it was hard, most people spend time with their children, family and friends and go Christmas shopping. I wasn’t allowed to do anything like that. I had to stay in the house, I wasn’t allowed to visit my family, I wasn’t allowed to see my older children, he would go out and have Christmas dinner and I had to stay indoors on my own. It was hard.

‘Trevi helped me to understand the different roles that a perpetrator can play. Every session was like a light bulb moment. My ex-partner made me believe that no one else would love me and that I didn’t deserve anyone to love me. Trevi taught me to recognise red flags in a toxic relationship.’
The Big Give campaign allows the Plymouth-based charity to access a match funding pot. Individual donations to Trevi are being matched by the Big Give champions who has pledged to support them.

From midday on Tuesday 29 November to midday on Tuesday 6 December, the money raised will have a massive impact on the work Trevi does in supporting women in recovery who access its services from across the UK.

Carrie, a Sunflower Practitioner, says, ‘ In our experience trauma and abuse can often escalate at Christmas time. Every year, more women are turning to us, desperate to flee domestic abuse. This appeal is a fantastic opportunity for us to raise vital funds to ensure that women like Tammy are given a chance to gain a safe and fresh start in life. By raising £6,000 in online donations this week, we can access a match funding pot already pledged to the charity, which means the total we receive will be £12,000. We want to encourage everyone who would normally support our Christmas appeal to please donate this week so we can ensure our donations will be doubled. By supporting women and children trapped by domestic abuse, lives will be saved this Christmas.’

The charity stresses that donations must be made through The Big Give’s website to be doubled in value, and donations made through other online sources will not count towards The Big Give Christmas Campaign.
