Abuse & Relationships

How we can help

At Trevi Women’s Centre, we provide a safe, women-only space, supported by trained practitioners.

The abuse and relationships programmes we deliver are designed to help you better understand the patterns of abuse, recognise warning signs, and feel less alone.

Some women come because they are currently in an abusive relationship. Others come after leaving, or because they are still trying to work out whether what they experienced is/was abuse.

You do not need to have everything figured out before coming.

Own my life

Own My Life is an innovative course for women who have experienced domestic abuse. It helps women make sense of what has happened, understand how abuse affects confidence and decision-making, and begin to reclaim ownership of their lives.

The course uses short films, group discussion and interactive activities to explore:

  • the impact of abuse on women’s lives,
  • how controlling behaviour shows up in relationships,
  • practical tools for safety and recovery,
  • and how to rebuild confidence, voice and choice.

Own My Life is often helpful for women who are ready to reflect more deeply on their experience and want support to move forward in a stronger and more self-directed way.

This is a bookable course, so spaces are arranged in advance.

The Freedom Programme

The Freedom Programme helps women understand the beliefs and behaviours that sit behind domestic abuse. It looks at the different tactics abusers use to gain power and control, and helps women identify patterns that can otherwise be difficult to name while living through them.

The course also explores the impact of domestic abuse on children and helps women recognise warning signs in future relationships. Many women find it helpful because it gives language to things they may have experienced for a long time without fully understanding.

This is a rolling drop-in programme. That means:

  • you can join at any point,
  • you do not need to start at week one,
  • you can dip in and out if needed,
  • and you do not need to book in advance.

If you attend all 11 sessions, in any order, you will receive a Freedom Programme Certificate.

You will need to register with us before attending the programme.

Trauma Stabilisation

The Trauma Stabilisation programme provides short-term, practical support for women whose experiences of domestic abuse or sexual violence are actively affecting how they feel, think and respond on a day-to-day basis.

Trauma can leave the nervous system on constant alert, making everyday life feel overwhelming or unsafe. The programme helps women understand what is happening in their mind and body, recognise their individual trauma responses and learn practical techniques to manage difficult emotions, thoughts and physical reactions.

When a woman feels emotionally safer and more grounded, she may be ready to progress to the Own My Life or Freedom Programme.

Trauma Stabilisation is a new course at Trevi.  More information on course days and times – as well as how to book – will be available here soon.

Support for Women in the Armed Forces

Whilst domestic abuse can happen anywhere, armed forces life can add extra pressure and extra barriers to getting help.

For some women, professional and personal lives overlap, which can make confidentiality feel harder. Rank, power dynamics and hypermasculine cultures can play a part too.

For many women, it can be unclear whether military or civilian services are the right route.

Our Armed Forces IDVAs are specially trained to understand the pressures and complexities of domestic abuse, sexual violence, and stalking within the military community. We support women aged 16+ who have a link to the armed forces and are affected by current or historic abuse, including sexual harassment and sexual violence, including:

  • Serving women
  • Girlfriends, partners and ex-partners of serving personnel
  • Spouses and family members of serving personnel

Get Support

Abuse in a relationship is not always physical. It can also be emotional, psychological, sexual, financial or coercive. It can look like being controlled, isolated, threatened, humiliated, monitored, blamed or made to feel afraid. Over time, abuse can make you question your own judgement, lose confidence, and feel cut off from other people.

If someone is frightening you, controlling you, pressuring you, making you feel small, or making it hard for you to live freely, support is available.
