Why We March
Reclaim the Night began in the 1970s, when women across the UK rose up against male violence and the expectation that they should stay indoors after dark to “keep themselves safe”. Instead of shrinking their world, they marched. They reclaimed the streets. They demanded better.
Today, the message remains just as urgent. Women and girls still experience high levels of harassment, abuse and fear in public spaces. Reclaim the Night is our collective refusal to accept this as normal.
Our march brings together survivors, students, families, frontline workers, activists and allies. It is a moment of resistance and of hope. A chance to show that Plymouth will not tolerate Violence Against Women and Girls. A chance to stand in solidarity with those whose voices are too often dismissed or ignored.
Join Us
- Walk with us as we take to Plymouth’s streets to call for change.
- Add your voice to a tradition of courage and community that spans generations.
- Help us build a city where women and girls can move freely, confidently and safely.
This is your night too. Together, we reclaim it.

FAQ’s
Accessibility
We want our event to be accessible and enjoyable for all. Please bring any devices with you that will make the march more comfortable. There will be plenty of noise to ensure our message gets across along the way, so noise-cancelling headphones may be helpful for those with neurodiversity. There will also be plenty of event stewards on hand to walk with anyone who may find the march a little more difficult than others.
The route is pram and wheelchair accessible throughout. Whilst there will be no areas to stop and rest along the march, there will be plenty of seating available before and after the walk.
Nervous about attending?
Reclaim the Night is designed with care, safety and inclusion at its heart. You can take part in whatever way feels right for you.
• Trained volunteers and marshals will be there throughout the event
• You can stand at the back, walk with a friend, or join us partway through
• There’s no expectation to chant, hold placards or speak – being present is enough
• You’re free to leave at any time, no questions asked
• We welcome survivors, supporters, first-timers and quiet allies alike
This march isn’t about confidence or volume, it’s about community. It’s about showing up for a safer Plymouth, together.
