Trevi Launches ENOUGH Campaign for 16 Days of Activism: A City United Against Violence

On November 25, local women’s charity Trevi will once again launch its bold, city-wide campaign for 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, declaring a powerful message: ENOUGH. This initiative aims to inspire action across Plymouth, urging everyone to play their part in ending violence against women and girls.

The statistics are stark. In 2023/24, there were 3,966 recorded domestic abuse-related violent crimes in Plymouth—a 6.9% increase from the previous year and a 5.2% rise over the past five years. Domestic abuse now accounts for 37.4% of all violent crimes and 22.1% of all reported crime in the city.

In partnership with local organisations including Plymouth City Council, M.A.N Culture Plymouth and Plymouth Argyle Football Club, Trevi will amplify it’s ENOUGH campaign through billboards, posters and banners, and an engaging social media presence. These efforts aim to bring the city together and shine a spotlight on the urgent need to combat gender-based violence.

Hannah Shead, CEO of Trevi, shares the campaign’s mission:‘The message is clear: the movement is simple – everyone can get involved. Intimidation, harassment, and abuse have no place in our city. At Trevi, we see the devastating impact of violence against women and girls, and we remain steadfast in our commitment to ending it.’

Councillor Sally Haydon, Cabinet Member for Community Safety at Plymouth City Council said: ‘The message of the campaign is simple, women and girls have had enough.

‘The campaign shows that we all stand united in tackling Violence Against Women and Girls in the city. I hope that as many people as possible take part in one of the events across the 16 days. Plymouth says enough.’

Councillor Zoe Reilly, Violence Against Women and Girls Champion for the City, said: ‘The ‘Enough’ campaign shows that working together is so important to raise awareness, to come together, and make a stand to ending violence against women and girls. We need to continue being loud and working together to protect women and girls.’

A prominent partner again this year M.A.N Culture’s Matt Garrett said, ‘M.A.N Culture is supporting this campaign as we agree that it is time to say ENOUGH. We are working hard in Plymouth to bring a change in attitudes and behaviours, by working with men and boys to start conversations about masculinity and its impact. – It is time for action and it is time for men to be part of the solution. Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) is not OK, and it never has been.’

Katie McManus, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Manager at Plymouth Argyle Football Club said, ‘As a fellow South West organisation, we are proud to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Trevi on the good work they are doing.

‘We can see, from dedicated fixtures in which we have partnered with Trevi, that their message speaks to people, and in the spirit of the Visions and Values of our football club, we believe that football should be a safe space for all. There is no place for discrimination of any kind – in sport and in society – and we take a zero-tolerance approach on this.’

Trevi’s Sunflower Women’s Centre has been a lifeline for women like Rachel, ‘When I was in an abusive relationship, I was so angry at myself and I was so ashamed that I had let this happen to me, as I had seen this happen to my parents. Coming to Sunflower helped me to understand that it wasn’t my fault and that I could let go of my shame. Although this seems small it changed my life for ever. Sunflower gave me the strength and community to be able to get up every day. I was able to look at myself in the mirror differently and be kind to myself.’

This year’s ENOUGH campaign will culminate in a moving event on Thursday, November 28, at the serene Elizabethan Gardens in Plymouth. Trevi will unveil the Secret Firefly Garden, a powerful display symbolising resilience and hope for women impacted by trauma, violence, and abuse.

The garden will come alive with glowing fireflies, each representing the courage of women who have faced significant adversity. This poignant evening is a reminder of the collective strength and unity in the face of trauma, offering hope and healing to those who have endured so much.
As Trevi and its partners reflect on those affected by violence and honour the lives lost, they are united in demanding change. Plymouth is standing together to say: ENOUGH.

Be part of the movement to end violence against women and girls. Together, we can create a safer future.
