Trevi calls Plymouth to action with the powerful ‘Reclaim the Night’ march to fight for an end to Violence Against Women and Girls.

The statistics are concerning. In 2023, Plymouth experienced a significant number of domestic violence and sexual offences, totalling 6,342 incidents. In the same year, the city reported 153 incidents of violence and sexual offences in the city centre, accounting for 36.4% of all crimes in that area.1

In response, Trevi is once again urging the community to come together for change at their ‘Reclaim the Night’ march, which will take place on Friday, February 7, 2025, during Sexual Violence Awareness Week. This will be Trevi’s second ‘Reclaim the Night’ march in Plymouth, a vital initiative for a city grappling with a higher-than-average prevalence of violence against women and girls (VAWG). Following the tragic deaths in our City, we have witnessed several marches aimed at addressing women’s safety. This event continues to build on those efforts, reigniting the city’s commitment to creating a safer, more inclusive, and compassionate community for all.

The march will begin with placard-making at 4:00 PM at Arts University Plymouth, Tavistock Place. The walk will commence at 6:15 PM and culminate back at Tavistock Place, featuring empowering speeches, and discussions focused on collectively addressing violence against women and girls.

A Legacy of Resistance and Change
‘Reclaim the Night’ marches have been prominent across the UK for nearly five decades. They originated in the 1970s as a response to women being given curfews due to violence, particularly following the murders committed by Peter Sutcliffe. These marches have come to symbolise women’s frustration with societal expectations to modify their behaviour for safety.
Today sadly, the movement remains just as relevant. Women continue to demand that public spaces be safe for everyone, regardless of sex. In Plymouth, the march aims to raise awareness, support survivors, and educate individuals on how to actively contribute to ending VAWG.

Voices of Change
Mel Sevieri, Trevi’s Community Fundraiser and event organiser, highlighted the event’s significance, ‘Plymouth has worked tirelessly over recent years to bring about significant changes the women in our city. However, with VAWG crimes still on the rise in Plymouth, we are eager to see even more progress. Through ‘Reclaim the Night,’ a global movement that many are familiar with, we will stand together, support survivors, and reclaim our nights in the hope of creating a brighter and safer future where everyone can live without fear. We are proud of our partnership with the Arts University Plymouth and so grateful to the staff and volunteers who stand alongside us in this fight. Join us and make your voice count!’
The event is supported by Arts University Plymouth. Jacqueline Moore, Director of External Relations said, ‘It’s a privilege for university staff and student volunteers to be able to support this important event to raise awareness of the unacceptable national and international statistics on sexual violence. We hope as many people as possible will join Trevi in marching to demand that women and girls should feel safe to enjoy public spaces day and night without looking over their shoulders for fear of violence and harassment.’
